How To Avoid Looking Like A Clone

Style Clones

Don’t you just hate it when you spend hours putting together a cool look for yourself, only to run into someone wearing exactly the same look?

Style is supposed to be a unique, individual expression of yourself, so you don’t want to end up looking like someone else. Plus it can be really embarrassing looking like you’re a couple with some stranger you’ve never met before.

Here are some tips to avoid being a style clone:

1) Avoid doing all your shopping in one store

I’m not a huge fan of shopping myself, so I can understand the temptation of wanting to just buy all your clothing at one store. Problem is, a lot of other guys think the same way, and end up looking like each other.

The solution is to buy your clothing from a range of sources. Don’t just do all your shopping at the Gap, or you’ll end up looking like one of their manikins. Mix it up a little, by picking and choosing from different stores and brands.

2) Buy your t-shirts online

People who live in the same area tend to shop at the same stores, increasing the likelihood of looking like each other or wearing the same t-shirt as someone else.

One way around this is to do your shopping online, especially for t-shirts. There are websites out there such as Threadless and TeeFury that come out with cool t-shirts every week, and the quantity of these tees are limited, so it increases the chances of owning a unique shirt, that no one else around you has.

3) Make your own clothing

If you want to take things a step further, you can even invest some time into making your own custom clothing. CafePress and Zazzle are two sites you can go to turn any design you have (as long as it’s not copyrighted) into a original t-shirt of your making.

If you want to do it old school, learn how to sew, and customize a t-shirt with some personalized stitching and patches. Also, consider getting yourself a pair of Raw Denim jeans, to create a pair of pants that is literally molded to your body.

4) Shop at vintage clothing stores

Doing your shopping at vintage clothing stores and second-hand clothing stores is a great way to pick up some cool and unique pieces that are impossible to find anywhere else. As a bonus, many vintage items are of higher quality than the mass produced textiles of today.

5) Spice it up with some accessories

It’s going to be hard standing out from the crowd if you’re wearing something fairly generic like a white shirt and a black blazer, but you can create your own personal look by adding in some accessories.

Jewelry isn’t just for women anymore. Consider spicing your look up with some masculine arm bands, watches, necklaces, and rings. Try to get pieces that are unique, and have a personal meaning to you. That way you can use them as conversation pieces and ways to connect with people as well.

Hopefully that’s given you some ideas on how to create a unique look for yourself. Of course it’s going to be impossible to have a completely original look, but if you follow the tips above you should be able to avoid looking like a clone most of the time.

Post in the comments below if you have any other ideas for avoiding looking like a clone.

Love threadless and those unique T-shirt stores. For those of you from East Asia, there are super cool designer stores in Japanese and Korean and Chinese but you can only checkout if you know the language. (i.e. Black Peace Now in Japanese)

      Hello guys!

Excellent article…i read it last night and just after reading i started searching on eBay for bracelets, rings and collars (i like stainless steel). Also looked for a couple of nice jeans. I really like the bracelet picture shown in this article. Is there any possibility you provide at least the brand. Thanks!

I do most of my shopping for bracelets on eBay as well. Not sure what the brand of the bracelet that’s pictured is, but try searching for “three-tone link men’s bracelet”.

      Thanks Casual!

I will do my homework with those keywords.
