Checklist Before Heading Out the Door

If you're planning to go out – even just to the store – it's important to check your look. You never know who you'll meet. And we're not talking about fashion per se, but the little details that tell people you aren't a dirty hobo who can't hold a job or keep a girl.

Here's the checklist:

1) Clean your nails.

Nothing and I mean NOTHING is a bigger turn off than dirty nails. Be sure your nails are free of grit, hangnails, and dry, scabby cuticles. A nail cleaner is genius for digging under the nails to grab those muddy bits, so use one. If you have stubborn dirt, try a nail brush. Also it's not lame to use moisturizer. Here's a manly one:

2) Tend to the unibrow.

This one's a fine line. Don't pluck your eyebrows so they look arched and “tended to,” but DO rid yourself of the hair between the brows. (you're supposed to have two eyebrows and not just one). Unibrow hair is a caveman look that's definitely not hot. If you're not a plucker, you can have your brows waxed, but have it professionally done.

3) Control the hair on the head, unless bed hair is your “look.”

I'm not asking you to be coiffed, mind you. Just to look like you put some effort into walking out the door beyond actually walking out the door. A little pomade or something similar, eliminates crazy hair syndrome and helps pull you together with a minimum of effort.

4) Wash your face.

That oil slick? Should not be on your face. Get it off of there with some cleanser and a wash cloth. (Exfoliating wouldn't kill you either).

5) Pick the right shoes.

You know how shoes make the man, right? It's one of the first things women notice. Even if you're just running to the gas station, wear something casual but not sloppy. Here's a great pair of throw-'em-on shoes for quick trips.

6) Check the nose and ears.

For…debris. Not to mention, stray hairs in those orifices are no fun for others to see. Grab yourself a small pair of blunt scissors designed for de-hairing or get a nose and ear hair clipper, and trim those areas before you go anywhere.

It's true that the little things add up to a big impression. If you're out and about looking like you don't care about yourself, other people won't either.
